Graduate study in Human Development and Family Science prepares students in the creation, dissemination, and application of knowledge that enhances the quality of life for individuals and families. HDFS has a 50-year history of providing quality graduate education in family and child studies.

Career opportunities include child development specialist, administrative positions in human service programs, the Cooperative Extension Service, private practice, or doctoral study.

Return to topDoctor of Philosophy Degree

The Ph.D. in Human Environmental Sciences with specialization in HDFS is a research doctoral program designed to promote breadth, depth, and integration in Human Development and Family Science through research and other experiences. Doctoral students collaborate with faculty and other graduate students on research projects which integrate the theoretical and empirical knowledge base in HDFS and investigate key processes associated with individual and relationship competence.

All applicants must submit for review:

For Fall admissions, the postmark deadline for application materials is February 15.

For the MFT Specialization students are only admitted to begin study in the fall semester. The postmark deadline for application materials is January 10.

For Spring admissions, the postmark deadline for application materials is October 15.

*A minimum Graduate GPA of 3.5 is preferred for prospective doctoral students and a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0 is preferred for prospective master’s students.

**GRE scores of 450 or higher in EACH of Verbal and Quantitative and a 3.5 or higher in Analytical Writing (Good for 5 years).
