HES week to help build schools in Kenya PDF Print E-mail

This HES Week (April 14-18) the graduate and the undergraduate students of Human Environmental Sciences are partnering together to assist with the rebuilding efforts of a school in Kenya that fell victim to looting during the recent riots. The school serves preschoolers and young children in Kibera, the largest slum in Africa. It is a privately funded school so no state or governmental support is provided and it is the only school servicing these children. For more information about the school.

Please give us your support as the students work on the following activities:

  1. Monday Cookout
    • On Library Lawn between 11:00 am and 2:00 pm
    • All collections will go to the Kenyan School
  2. Department Donation Competition
    • Booth will be setup outside of Westside Café from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm daily Tuesday through Friday
    • Jars for each department will be located at the booth.
    • A chart will mark just how many desks ($15 each) that each department has purchased.  Encourage those in your department to win this one!
  3. Graduate Students in Human Environmental Sciences Potluck Picnic
    • At the GSHES end of the year potluck picnic we will be collecting donations which will all go to the Kenyan School
    • Brumley Center, Friday, April 25, 6:30 pm
      Note: This is a "graduate student only" function, No faculty/staff.
  4. Look for articles on the HES website and in the O’Colly

Please help the students further their efforts by informing your classes of these events and by participating yourself. Donations raised to date from our students’ efforts total $900.  With your assistance, our student groups can make a significant impact on the school.
Community outreach is at the center of HES. Please assist the students in uplifting its importance during this HES Week.
